#G45Tip - Dimensional Ephemera Cards

By Katie Z.

“Occasionally, you would want to retain both sides of a really beautiful piece of card/paper. And you would wonder how. That somehow would catch you in some sort of papercrafting dilemma.

The Floral Shoppe ephemera and journaling cards are so beautifully designed to complete the entire paper collection that I decided to do up some cards that will retain their beauties. On today’s blogpost, I’ll share some #G45tips in how to create beautiful projects by maximizing your limited supplies.

All you need is just a few selected ephemera cards and some die cuts from the tags and pockets to get started.

I fussy cut the ornate frames as well some words out from these two ephemera cards by using a utility (or craft) knife, and use them separately as design elements and sentiments. This is one way in how to utilize certain design elements when you have limited supplies or can’t find other kinds of elements. Sometimes you just have to break apart the design on what is intended for and rearrange it.

Tip: Try not to cut through the paper to retain the card borders which you can use them for other crafting project. I’ve a video tutorial in how to fussy cut using utility knife which you can refer to.

How to Use a Utility Knife for Fussy Cutting Tutorial by Katie Z.

I chose the journaling sides as my decorative layouts using the ornate frames I fussy cut from other cards. Very subtly, I placed “Bloom” and “Planted” as sentiments over my layouts. And there it goes, a nicely done up ephemera cards which look good on both sides without compromising the beauty of these cards.

Tip: Fill your layout with some organza ribbon and/or dresdens to make your designs look full and complete.

I added some golden leaves which are the remnants I had die cut previously using the Large, ATC Tag & Flower Metal Dies. Most of the time I don’t really throw away excess die cuts so that I may be able to use them for projects as such.

Tip: Recycle used chipboards or thick cardboards from packagings to create dimensions for your project instead of using foam dots, which is more environmentally friendly and cost-effective.

Bye.” ~Katie Z.

I don't use my craft knife very often, but I may start after viewing your tutorial. This was very useful because some of the suggestions were counter-intuitive - starting with the position of the knife blade. I can see how using a knife rather than scissors will help conserve this very precious paper! Thank you for the idea of sharing this instruction and taking the time to make this very helpful video. Fussy cutting, a new and scary technique I am coming to terms with as well as Coptic colouring and a range of other new to me papercrafting must does. I found the video fascinating and will incorporate its teachings into my practice. My tip, such as it is for one so new to this hobby, is that I stamp a selection of different characters/flowers etc on to different types of paper. I then use different techniques to colour them in and when finished, good or bad, I fussy cut them out. I’ve not used any of my practice pieces on any projects, nor am I likely too, but I am enjoying myself.
