Hello, G45ers!

Thanks for joining us today for more fun and games-literally. Today, we have Clare's Charvill's premiere project as a Graphic 45 Brand Ambassador and it is a doozy! Clare has used Master Detective to create a customer board game set, and it is hard to imagine the meticulous planning and attention to detail a project as ambitious as this must have taken, but we are so happy to get to share it with you. Clare has carefully selected a variety of sheets from the colleciton to create custom game boards for several classic games, as well as storage for the various pieces. Amazingly, it all rests in a compact and lovely custom storage box that doubles as a great display piece. What is best is that Clare has included a kit with instructions and a YouTube video to make it easy to follow along at home. Before we jump into the feature, Clare also shares a bit about her crafting journey. Checkmate, G45ers! This blog has it all.

Hi G45ers.  I’m Clare Charvill and live in rural Warwickshire in the heart of the UK. I’m a mum of two fab grown up boys and craft professionally.  Since I found the Graphic 45 paper collections just over seven years ago, I’ve become a total addict. The gorgeous vintage collections inspire my creativity and the projects I design and share with like-minded paper crafters all over the world. Here in the UK I host a website, workshops, and retreats all over the country, have great fun sharing the G45 love, and have showcased many projects and craft ideas with the G45 collections on UK Craft TV.

Running such a diverse business single handedly doesn’t leave me with much spare time, but when I can I love baking, gardening, spending time with the boys and friends and a little retail therapy too.

Fun Facts:

  1. Totally addicted to the US version of House of Cards and am slowly working my way through the fourth series before starting to watch the fifth.

  2. On a craft front I’m enjoying having a new girly in the family (my son’s girlfriend) and making her G45 themed home décor items for their new house.  We have a long list of asks to work though.

  3. My all-time favourite G45 collection has to be Curtain Call.  It’s the one that kick started my paper craft journey. As a total addict, I do love them all and always get excited when new collections are released.

Master Detective Compendium of Games Box
By Clare Charvill

Before introducing you to my project, I’d like to thank Diane, Charee, and Aimee for inviting me to be a Grand Ambassador for Graphic 45 here in the UK again this year.  I’m very touched and look forward to another year of sharing my creativity with the amazing Graphic 45 collections at the workshops and retreats I run here in the UK and with crafters all around the world via my YouTube channel and blog.

I’m often asked where the inspiration for my designs comes from, and without exception, my reply is always the papers. The theme inspires my thought process, and after browsing through the papers, ideas start popping about in my head.

The inspiration for the project I’m sharing with you today came from the front cover of the collection and ‘The Game is afoot’ banner and then the cards and the B-side of the ‘Get a Clue’ paper.

The games in the box all have special memories for me, some we played as a family when I was little and others I still play with the boys and my sister.  As a crafter, you’ll know how hard it is to decide which papers to use, and then which side, but once I’d done that I was away. And here it is – the Master Detective Compendium of Games Box.

The project was designed around the 12 x 12 papers, and I’ve used a mix of designer papers and patterns & solids throughout. The games counters and dice are neatly stored away in the two rows of little boxes, the top ones are held in the lid with magnets to stop them falling out when the box is closed too.

The base of the box is decorated with ‘Get a Clue’ paper, solids, and a border strip – I love that train and dog tooth paper and it provides a great space for card and dice games.

/Users/clare/Pictures/Photos Library.photoslibrary/Masters/2017/07/10/20170710-063017/MD Compendium of Games Box 5 Clare Charvill Graphic 45.jpg

There are single solitaire, noughts and crosses boards.  Each counter is made up of punched black card circles, a paper circle on top and coated in glossy accents to add a little weight to them.  Harry was my helper on these.

The full-sized chess/draughts board is altered in one sheet of Web of Lies paper on the game side and one sheet of ‘Beautiful Mysteries’ on the reverse. This was fun to make.

Smaller boxes hold the cards and chess pieces.

At the bottom of the box are the backgammon boards.  I’ve inlaid black and orange patterns and solids under the green plaid paper for the overall effect and four single sheets make up the playing area.  The dice and counters have their own boxes.

This really was a great project to design and make. I’ve actually made two of them, one each as heirlooms for my boys.  If they have families, they will be able to carry the game playing tradition. I´m totally blown away with this project here Claire. I absolutely LOVE it. I can´t really find out, if you´ve got some written rules for these games somewhere, or you just had them from some old games, but would really like to know, if there´s any place, where they can be found, as I would love to make such a set for my granddaughters, who´s always out on camping with their family every year, and they´re also really amazed by this and said, it would be soo perfect for them too, but none of us know all the rules for these games.
