3x3 Craft Challenge: Featuring Book Boxes, Metal Brads, & 8x8 Papers

Posted by Graphic 45 08/08/2017 45 Comment(s) Mini Albums,Home Decor,Mixed Media,Altered Art,3x3 Craft Challenge,

Hello, G45ers!

It is a big day here on the blog so let's jump right in. Today we have our 3x3 Craft Challenge featuring talented brand ambassadors Alexandra Morein, Kathy Clement, and Nico Scrap. For this challenge, we have asked them to create a project featuring a box, stamped metal brads, and an 8x8 paper pad of their choice. First up, Alexandra has created a masculine and delightful Master Detective Boox Box and Album. Check out that clever "evidence board!" Next up, Kathy shares a naturally beautiful Nature Sketchbook Stationary set. We love the honeycomb look from the chickenwire chipboard die detailing! Finally, Nico Scrap wraps it up with an evocative and conceptual Sacred Heart Shaker Card that also features Nature Sketchbook. That monochromatic look works great! Now, onto the good stuff.

Master Detective Book Box and Albums

Alexandra Morein

“My project today was created for the Graphic 45 “3X3 Challenge” and the three products I had to use this time were a Book Box, Stamped Brads and an 8X8 Paper Pad of my choice.

I’ve painted my craft book box with brown acrylic paint inside and out. I matted it with the paper from the “Master Detective” collection and created a hand bound notebook + a mini album to go inside.

I was lucky to have a few metal embellishments which matched the theme of the paper collection better than anything else – bullets and guns. You will see those on the spine of the notebook and on the cover of the box, where I also tried to create a kind of an “Evidence Board,” like those used by the policemen and detectives.

The metal brads are on the front frame, on the box cover, finishing off the design of this project.

I hope to inspire you to create a few things with these Graphic 45 products and use the amazing Master Detective paper line too.” ~Alexandra Morein

Botanical Stationery Set with Nature Sketchbook

By Kathy Clement

"Did you know that handwritten notes are making a big comeback?  Right smack dab in the middle of the age of technology, the handwritten note is a rising trend. Do a quick Google search, and you’ll find that both individuals and businesses are rediscovering the value of personalized, handwritten notes,  This is great news for those of us who have always loved pretty stationery!

With this trend in mind, I set out to create an elegant boxed stationery set for the G45 3x3 July Challenge. Three G45 Brand Ambassadors were asked to create with their choice of 8x8 papers, Staples Stamped Metal Brads and a Standard Black Book Box.  I found it to be surprisingly liberating to work with a limited supply list, as it forced me to dig deep and be extra creative.

The Standard Black Book Box provides the perfect backdrop for the gorgeous green hues found in Nature Sketchbook.  The interior of the box holds 4 pretty botanical notecards with matching lined envelopes, and a  handmade address book with pockets for stamps and address labels.  This would make a lovely gift...but I like it so much I just might keep it myself!" ~Kathy Clement

TIPS

  • Coat the exterior of the box with a sealant to protect the patterned papers from damp or smears of jelly toast.  I used Ranger Distress Collage Medium as it dries very quickly.  The paper may bubble when the medium is first applied, but it will lay flat again if you leave it to dry overnight.

  • Use the same “recipe” when making a set of notecard and use an assembly line format to put the layers together.  It will make the job go very quickly.

  • To create elegant lined envelopes, trim designer paper about ⅛” less than the width of the opening.  Slide the cut paper into the envelope to make sure it fits well and adjust if necessary.  Round the top corners with a ¼” corner rounder.  With the paper inserted in the envelope, mark the fold line, score, and glue in place.

  • I dug into my stash of retired Staples Metals to find these lovely metal butterflies.  I ran them through an embossing folder to add texture and design.  Then I tapped them with Distress Paints in colors that complemented Nature Sketchbook.  The bottom layer is flat, the middle layer has shaped wings and the top layer is made with one of the small butterflies.  Layers are connected with a Staples Stamped Metal Brad, which fits perfectly through the opening in the center of the butterfly body.

  • For the ribbon closure: to keep the ends of the ribbon from fraying, tap a very small dot of Art Institute Dries Clear Glue onto the cut ends.  It will not leave a mark but will prevent the ribbon from fraying.

"What I like most about Summer, is the  Summer storms and even more, the first sunshine after the storm, and that’s what I've tried to represent with this card.

This is my first shaker card and I loved making it. Instead of confetti, glitter or anything else I’ve decided to put gears in the inside….of course! Hope you like it!" ~Nico Scrap
