Sister Layout

By Sandy Trefger

“Hello, Sandy here to share my “Sister Layout” that I created out of the beautiful Graphic 45 Penny’s Paper Doll Family collection.  When I saw this collection, I knew right away that it was perfect for my favorite photo of my sister, Barbara and I.  In the photo that I used for this layout, we are around 2 and 7 years of age. I am the youngest.  I was born on her birthday five years apart.  She cried when they told her she got a little sister for her birthday. Ha, ha.  In the photo above, I’ve placed my Toni doll and my sister’s diary.  I remember always wanting to read that diary as a kid.  After she passed away, the diary came into my possession.  I’ve read it and there are no deep dark secrets at all, but I’m so very happy to have it.  I’m really surprised that she kept it for so many years.

The Penny’s Paper Doll Family is a wonderful addition to the Graphic 45 line with so many possibilities. You’ll be very happy with it especially if you loved paper dolls as a child.  It is a fussy cutting crafters dream come true!  I loved cutting out Penny and her little sister and choosing the clothes they would wear for this layout.  The baby carriage (in Texas we call it a buggy) is so fabulous.  Just look at all that detail!

Tip:  When planning a layout, choose the different patterns of paper you think you want to use and cut them down into the sizes you want for the layout.  Also, go ahead and fussy cut out your elements and choose your ribbons and flowers and lay it all out loosely on the layout to see how you might like it. Of course, you may change your mind before permanently attaching it, but this gives you a good starting place.

Fun Facts:

  • I love to mix up different types, textures, and colors of ribbon to create a “junk bow” for a project like the one I used on this layout.  If I don’t have enough ribbon to make loops, I just cut a dovetail for each ribbon and tie them all together.

  • I adore old things--old houses, old knick-knacks, old furniture, old toys etc.  I have a collection of my own toys from when I was a child, but I’ve also collected old toys from estate sales and antique malls that remind me of toys that I used to have.

I have a process tutorial video to share with you to show how I put my Sister Layout together.”

As always, Sandy hits it out of the park...simple, sweet and a project I would actually attempt. I'll be buying the paper doll paper for sure, even if only to look at!

I love creating things that others feel they can also create! But don't just look at the beautiful paper, use it! Or buy two. One for a project and one to look at. :) Thank you for your lovely comment.

Such a lovely layout...made with a beautiful doily that represents your mother. I couldn't have chosen a better element on which to base your photos. I frequently use doilies I purchase on ebay or from a resale shop...often causes the shop owners to cringe when I tell them what I'm going to do! In my opinion, re-purposing is better than storing in a drawer. Well done!!

Thank you so much Martie for your lovely comment! I felt it was a perfect addition to the layout and as I said in the video I have a lot of these doilies and love that this one is being showcased.

Sandy, thank you so much for sharing this beautiful layout. My older sister, my only sibling, passed away in Sept 2016. She was 4 1/2 years older than me. I have a picture of us that strongly resembles your picture. Penny's Paper Doll Family collection was already one my wish list. Now it's a must have! Bless you for your tutorial.

This is a stunning paper collection! Your layout is beautiful! You may already be planning this but I think you should put it in a shadow box with the diary and doll. Just a thought :)
