Pop-up cards – Wonder of Oz Collection
Tutorial by Maria Smeshkova
“Hello everyone!
Today I’m sharing a set of dimensional pop-up cards created with the beautiful Wonder of Oz collection. For this project, I wanted to create three different scenes, each one telling its own story, with its own mood, colors, and characters. I really love how this collection allows you to build little magical worlds, and pop-up structures are perfect for that.
Card One — Glinda in the Clouds.
The first card is soft, airy, and full of light. I created a dreamy cloud scene featuring Glinda. I used light blue tones and soft layers to create depth, and added cloud elements to enhance the sense of floating. This card feels calm and magical, almost like a quiet moment in the story.
Card Two — Poppy Field Scene.
The famous poppy field scene inspires the second card. Here, I focused on rich red tones and layered flowers to create that lush, slightly mysterious atmosphere. The main characters are the Cowardly Lion and Toto, surrounded by poppies. I really wanted to capture that magical moment from the story and turn it into a dimensional composition.
Card Three — Yellow Brick Road.
The third card tells the story of the Yellow Brick Road leading to the Emerald City. This one is brighter and more dynamic, with a strong perspective created by the layered structure. For the background, I added a custom element to represent the Emerald City, which gave me more freedom in building the scene. I also added small details like glowing windows and a bit of sparkle to bring everything to life.
For two of the cards, I used coordinating dies from Lawn Fawn to create the pop-up base. However, for the third card, I wanted to show that this design is accessible to everyone. In my full video tutorial, I demonstrate how to build the entire pop-up structure from scratch using simple measurements, basic tools, and no dies at all. So even if you don’t have any special tools, you can still recreate this project by hand. You can watch the full tutorial and follow along step by step.
Once the structure was ready, I focused on layering and storytelling. I selected elements from the Ephemera Set and Chipboard pieces, added borders, and built each layer carefully to create depth.
I also love adding small details at the end, like rhinestones, just to bring a little extra sparkle and magic into the project.

Tips for Creating Pop-Up Cards
- Start with a strong base: A well-constructed pop-up mechanism is key to a successful card. Take your time measuring and scoring accurately.
- Layer with intention: Build your scene from back to front to create depth and dimension.
- Mix textures and elements: Combine ephemera, chipboard, and fussy-cut images for a rich, dynamic look.
- Tell a story: Think of each card as a mini scene—choose colors, characters, and elements that work together cohesively.
- Don’t be afraid to go tool-free: As Maria shows, you can create beautiful pop-up cards without dies using simple tools and basic techniques.
- Add finishing touches: Rhinestones, sequins, and subtle sparkle can bring your card to life and add that extra wow factor.
