DIY Merry & Bright Crafty Storage Box

By Nikki Sher

“Hello Graphic 45 Friends!

It’s Nikki Sher here back this month to share an awesome DIY Storage Box I created using the brand new Merry & Bright Collection.  I am so enamored with this collection!  I will definitely be making a few projects with it!

This month I was tasked with showing you a fun way that I store my supplies.  I’ve actually had this wood box sitting in my crop room for over a year.  I knew that I wanted to decorate it, but I was just waiting for the right time.  And that time was now!

Since this box started off as plain wood, the first thing I did was spray paint it with a matte black spray paint.  I could have painted it with acrylic paint, but spray paint is just so much faster!  Next, I had to decide which papers I wanted to use for the box.  I knew I wanted a statement piece for the outside and the “Joys of the Season” paper was perfect for that.  I measured my box so that there would be about a ¼” border around the patterned paper and got cutting!  To match the corners of the box with the patterned paper I held the paper against the edge of the box and used a strong nail file to match the corner.  I knew I was going to distress the box later, so if I took off a little paint in the process that was okay.

After getting all the paper measured and the corners rounded, I started adhering my paper to the box.  For this process I used Collage Medium – it’s a wonderful artist grade collage glue.  I would not recommend Modge Podge for a project like this.  Did you know that Modge Podge collects dust?  It’s attracted to it!  So for a display piece that I want to look nice through the holiday season – Collage Medium was a must!  Remember when using Collage Medium that you have to apply the glue to the back of the paper as well as the front.  If you get a little rippling, that is okay!  I promise it will smooth out in the end.

Once all the patterned paper was in place and the Collage medium was dry, I started distressing my box.  I used that same rough nail file as before and sanded each edge of the box to my liking.  I really wanted it to have that aged look.  I think it turned out great!  After that it was a matter of decorating!

To decorate the box I used the Merry & Bright Ephemera Set.  I chose a couple of my favorite images and started layering them with foam tape to the front of the box.  Now you’re probably asking, why didn’t I choose a more year-round paper?  Well the answer is that I really love the Merry & Bright Collection and I thought this would be a fun way to liven up my crop room for the upcoming holiday season.  I could also fill it with some holiday greenery and set it out as a display piece during the holidays.

I really loved creating with the Merry & Bright Collection and can’t wait to work on another project with it!  What are you planning to make first?

Thank you so much for taking the time to read about my DIY Merry & Bright Crafty Storage Box project.  I hope I’ve inspired you to create something today and as always, please stay happy, healthy and crafty!

Best,
