Get Out of a Creative Slump with Embellishment Clusters

By Kristine Woods

“Hi crafty friends. Like me, I’m sure you have experienced times where you felt unmotivated, or lacking that creative spark to start a new project. Whether it’s from a lack of time, feeling stressed or overwhelmed by life situations, or any other reason, being in a creative slump is hard for a crafter. Today, I want to share some tips I use to help me take steps to get out of that creative slump and back to my crafting mojo.

TIP 1: if you aren’t feeling the creative spark, sometimes just looking through your papers might inspire you when you see the ones you absolutely love. Personally, I keep all of my Graphic 45 collections in individual plastic containers making it easy to browse through my favorites any time.

TIP 2: similar to tip 1, if I don’t have a particular project in mind, I often will walk through my craft room to look at all of my projects on display. For me, touching them, picking them up, flipping through them, and noticing what I love about each one reminds me why I love and enjoy paper crafting.

TIP 3: make something small. It doesn’t have to be anything elaborate or innovative. Sometimes, all it takes is to just get into the act of crafting and then the inspiration will start to flow. And sometimes, you might still not have much motivation, but at least you are crafting and not giving up!

Below, I will show you the little project I made with the Deck the Halls collection to get my creativity back on track. This is a simple technique I have used many times to feel like I’m making something that I can use, but not feeling too overwhelmed by it since it’s a smaller project.

Make an Embellishment Cluster

To me, making a small project like an embellishment cluster is a great starting point. I like these projects because they can later be used on a larger project, such as on a card, a scrapbook layout, or in a mini album. Best of all, you can use this technique with any paper collection! This is also a great way to use up some of the scraps leftover from other projects.I hope you’ll grab some of your favorite Graphic 45 papers and join me.

Graphic 45 Supplies I Used

Deck the Halls Patterns & Solids Pack

Deck the Halls 8×8 Paper Pack

Deck the Halls Ephemera Assortment

Metal flower dies from the Large Tag & ATC tag die set

Other Supplies I Used

White Cardstock

Metallic gold cardstock

Adhesive

Scissors

Gems

To start, pick a paper that is your favorite, or one that is a neutral pattern for the background layer. If you have the Graphic 45 dies, use specialty papers such as metallic paper or vellum to cut pieces to add into your design. Select one piece from the paper, ephemera, or chipboard piece as your main focal point. Then, begin adding in layers of paper, ephemera, fussy cut pieces, and die cut pieces. Once you like the layers, adhere them down and add additional touches such as ribbons, twine, gems, pearls, paint flecks, or Stickles.

To see how my three embellishment clusters came together, I hope you will check out the video tutorial. Also, I’ll show you how you can use each of these smaller pieces on another project.

  1. What a wonderful post! There have been many times when I’ve found myself stuck in the creative process because I’m simply overwhelmed by possibilities. This is me at the end of Tip One: Too many ideas flitting through my head, unable to snag ahold of any one of them so I may purposefully follow through. (laughter) It was nice to get a glimpse of the projects in your studio, and thanks to Tip Two, I’ll now begin interacting with my own. Tip Three was genius. I love making embellishment clusters and can leap into that at a moment’s notice. So here’s my new tactic: Instead of wrestling with half-formed ideas and creating nothing, I’ll let the joy of making embellishments lead me right into the perfect project to which they may be affixed! Grateful to you, truly.

    1. Thank you so much for this lovely comment—it truly made us smile. 😊 That overwhelmed-by-ideas feeling is so real, and I’m glad the tips resonated with you. I especially love your takeaway from Tip Three—letting the joy of making embellishments lead you into a project is such a smart and playful approach. Excited for you as you begin interacting more with your own studio and materials. Happy Papercrafting!
