Altered Sketchbook

Tutorial by Anna Sigga

“It is so much fun to transform a regular sketchbook into something more personalised for yourself or as a gift.

The Spring is in the Air collection is filled with bright, happy colours, flowers, and cute little critters.

I decided to use the 8×8 paper pad because the patterns are just a tad smaller and will, therefore, be more prominent on the book’s cover.

The book itself measures 8 ¾ x 5 ¾ inches, so I cut the first paper at 8 x 5 ¼ inches and the second one at 7 ½ x 4 ¾ inches.

I wanted to create a worn look to the book, so I distressed the edges using scissors adn then inked the edges for a bit of colour.

To continue creating a focal point for all the pretty pieces from the ephemeral packs, I used a 6” doily as a backdrop, inked the edges, and adhered it in the centre.

Then I picked several images from the chipboard and ephemera packs. When I had arranged them how I wanted, I stuck them down and added stickers and gems for that little extra.

Such a fun and simple craft, and of course, the G45 papers look oh so cute against the black sketchbook.

Thanks for stopping by.” ~Anna

Tips for Altering Sketchbooks, Notebooks, or Planners:

  • Choose smaller-scale prints (like the 8×8 pad Anna used) for better visibility on smaller surfaces.

  • Measure before you cut! Leave a slight border so your paper doesn’t fray at the edges.

  • Distress and ink edges for a vintage, worn-in look that adds texture and depth.

  • Layer ephemera with foam tape or chipboard to create dimension and visual interest.

  • Embellish with trims, stickers, and gems for a personalized finish that reflects your style.

  • Bonus Idea: These altered books make beautiful handmade gifts for birthdays, graduations, or even a creative guestbook!
