Fall Decor Altered Washboard
September Facebook Challenge
By Sandy Trefger
Fall is a wonderful time of the year! In Texas it’s sometimes hard to tell if Summer has really ended and Fall has begun because it’s such a gradual change. We will still have sunflowers blooming right up until the first cold front. So for the Graphic 45 Fall Decor Facebook challenge, I knew I wanted to use French Country! Last year I was on a mission to buy a small, but obviously used for washing, washboard to have for any altering project that I might want “someday.” I found two and bought them both! I ended up selling the largest of the two to my nephew so he could give it to his sister for Christmas. I kept this one for myself, and it was perfect for this challenge.
Tip 1: When adding florals and ribbons to a project, collect several different colors and sizes. Don’t be afraid to use metallics and twines along with your more delicate ribbons. Create a “spray” of different flowers and leaves that extend from both sides, and then add your ribbons and bows to the center. Finish it off with a larger focal point flower as I did for this project.
Tip 2: Fussy cut out images to add on to a smaller patterned paper print which creates a whole new look.
Tip 3: Add dimension to your fussy cut out flowers by adding a bit of Glossy Accents and gold seed beads or prills to the centers.
Fun Facts:
-
I’m a country girl (my first 12 years were on a farm) and I love old vintage things like this washboard, but I also love to make things “ new” or altered by adding pretty flowers and ribbons.
-
I love to layer things in a project–papers, embellishments, flowers, ribbons and bows.–adding elements that normally wouldn’t go together or “match.”
-
My husband and I live on 4 ½ acres about five miles from town. It’s an unrestricted area, which means if you have old sheds or trailers on your property it’s okay. For my photos of this project, I took a walk in the back of our property and found a couple of places near the barn shed for some wonderfully rustic backgrounds.

I’m in love with this Fall Decor piece, and originally as I was working on it, I thought I would put it on our front door. It turned out so pretty that I realized it needed to stay inside so I added the magnetic memo notes. Go out, find something old, make it new again, and enjoy the coming Fall season!
