Hi crafty friends. As summer is fast approaching, I can’t help but think of summer vacation. My plan for this project was simple: create an 8 page chipboard camera-shaped album and decorate it with the gorgeous Scenic Route collection. However, one major mistake changed the entire project!
I could have scrapped the entire project and started over, but I didn’t. Instead, I’m sharing the tutorial to show you that sometimes mistakes truly can turn out better than what we had in mind!

Originally, I had planned to create 8 simple pages from the Patterns & Solids papers and use the cut apart sheets from the collection pack to add photo mats and embellishments.
I cut my papers, used a corner rounder, and roughed up all the edges. Then, I was going to use chipboard pieces and various mixed media supplies to create texture on all of the pages.
TIP: if you don’t have an edge distressing tool, you can use the open blade of your scissors to rough up those edges like I do!
But, a major mistake happened…instead of decorating only the front side of the 8 Patterns & Solids papers, I decorated both sides! And I didn’t realize my mistake until I had one side left to finish!
Honestly, I thought about pulling the pieces off the back side and still using the front sides. But there were too many cute interactive pieces I didn’t want to waste! I decided to add a hinge on all 8 pages so I could use both sides. Now I had to decorate 8 more pages so I ended up using the entire Patterns & Solids pack for the album!
Since there were now three times the pages, I decided chipboard embellishments and mixed media texture would make them too thick. Instead, I used the Ephemera Assortment to embellish all of my pages.
TIP: when there isn’t room for thick embellishments like chipboard pieces, opt for the ephemera assortment or stickers instead.
Since the camera lens is the focal point of this album, I wanted it to stand out from the rest of the cover. All of the ephemera pieces are layered and shaped to add depth and dimension.
The lens cap is removable, making it a photo spot or a decorative element, like I chose for my album. The final touch was to add the antique jewels to the center of the larger flowers.
How One Crafting Mistake Turned Into a Mini Album Masterpiece
Mistakes happen to all of us along our crafting journey, but they don’t have to stop the entire project! Sometimes, we just have to take a step back and find a creative solution. When your project takes a detour, lean into it.
Not every crafting mistake needs to be fixed—sometimes it deserves to be embraced. Kristine’s accidental double-sided pages inspired a completely new album structure that added even more interactive space for photos, journaling, and embellishments.
No distressing tool? No problem.
Create beautifully worn vintage edges by carefully running the open blade of your scissors along the paper edge. It’s an easy technique that adds texture and dimension without specialty tools.
Let your supplies guide the design.
When thicker embellishments would make your album too bulky, switch to ephemera, stickers, or die cuts. You’ll still create gorgeous layered pages while keeping your album easy to close and enjoyable to flip through.
Design around one unforgettable focal point.
Choose one feature that steals the show. In this album, the dimensional camera lens and removable lens cap immediately capture attention before inviting viewers to explore every page inside.
Use every sheet with confidence.
Kristine’s “mistake” ended up using nearly the entire Scenic Route Patterns & Solids Pack, proving that every paper can become part of the story when you’re willing to think creatively.
