How to Create Drama and Depth with Dark Tones | Mini Album

Hello G45ers!

We’re back with an inspiring new project from our talented Brand Ambassador, Janus Zate, who’s taken the beloved Graphic 45 Flutter – Keepsake Edition in a completely unexpected direction. If you’ve ever wondered how to bring depth, contrast, and sophistication to your scrapbook pages, this tutorial is for you.

In “Where Butterflies Glow,” Janus transforms a collection known for its soft florals and pastel butterflies into a bold and moody mini album that glows with contrast and personality. Using black cardstock, rich tones, and a few clever layering tricks, she proves that dark doesn’t have to mean heavy — it can make every color and detail shine.

This project is not only a feast for the eyes but also an educational deep dive into design balance, color theory, and texture in papercrafting. Whether you’re a beginner looking to elevate your layouts or an experienced maker ready to experiment, you’ll walk away inspired to embrace contrast and create your own dramatic masterpiece.

Where Butterflies Glow

A Dramatic Flutter Keepsake Album

Tutorial by Janus Zate

“I recently finished this scrapbook album using the Flutter Keepsake Edition from Graphic 45, and I took it in a slightly unexpected direction!

Originally, I was planning to do something soft and more colorful, since this collection is full of beautiful shades of pink, yellow and blue, add in those gorgeous butterflies, florals, and all that delicate charm. But then I thought… I’ve done that already. Let’s try something different.

So I decided to go to the dark side… not literally, but I did lean into richer, deeper colors this time, And honestly? I love how it turned out.

The darker background really makes the design elements pop. The butterflies, florals, and lighter details stand out so much more,  and it adds a bit of drama in the best way. There’s just something about black that makes everything else glow.

This collection is super versatile. Whether you want to go full blast on color or bold and moody, it can go in either direction. This darker version felt fresh and fun but I’m still curious as to how the album would look like when I do a different version of it, maybe I will some time soon. For now, I hope you like this project as much as I did.

Tip: It might seem bold, but black works really well as a base or frame for brighter patterns. It helps organize busy designs, creates instant contrast, and gives everything a clean, finished look.”

Tips for Designing with Drama

1. Embrace the Power of Black:
Black cardstock isn’t just for Halloween or gothic themes — it’s a designer’s secret weapon. It can make bright colors look brighter and help intricate details stand out.

2. Mix Textures Fearlessly:
Combine matte papers, glossy embellishments, and fabric trims to add depth and tactile interest. Janus used faux leather and black trim to bring a sophisticated edge.

3. Frame with Purpose:
Use darker shades as borders or mats behind patterned papers to bring structure and focus to your design.

4. Keep the Balance:
When working with bold backgrounds, leave some “breathing room” in your layout. Light or neutral accents will keep your pages from feeling heavy.
