Take the Scenic Route Double Layout
Tutorial by Kristine Woods
Â
“Hi crafty friends. Do you ever struggle to use your patterned papers together on a scrapbook layout? Today I have a quick and easy tutorial for making a double layout using two heavily patterned papers from the gorgeous new Scenic Route collection and added one additional patterned paper and some solid colored paper to balance them. Then, choose one of the coordinating Scenic Route Patterns & Solids paper for photo matting or use solid colored cardstock. There is a full video tutorial where I’ll walk you through making this easy-to-assemble layout.

Graphic 45 Supplies
3 sheets from the 12×12 Scenic Route Collection Pack
- Scenic Route Dark Layout
- Scenic Route Light Layout
- Far and Wide
1 sheet of the blue Patterns & Solids paper from the 12×12 Collection Pack cut to:Â
- 4 ¼” x 6 ¼”Â
- 4 ¼” x 3 ¼”
- 4 ¼” x 4 ¼”
Â
1 sheet yellow Patterns & Solids paper from the 12×12 Collection pack cut to:
- ¾” x 12” strips of yellow cardstock
- 8 ½” x 2” yellow cardstock, using a border punch/decorative scissors on one end
Â
Other Supplies
- Embellishments – Take the Scenic Route chipboard title, starfish chipboard, citrus fruit chipboard (can also use the Graphic 45 Ephemera Assortment to add embellishments)
- Yellow gems
*optional: if you want to double mat your photos, cut white cardstock ¼” smaller than the blue cardstock pieces listed above.
Â

Preparing the Graphic 45 Scenic Route Papers
We will be combining the Scenic Route Dark Layout and Scenic Route Light Layout pages to make our own background pages for the layout. To do this, cut 4 ¼” from the left side of the Dark Layout page. On the Light Layout page, cut 4 ¼” from the right side.
Â
For the Far and Wide paper, we will use these pieces as accents behind the photo mats. I cut the following pieces:
- 4 ¾” x 2”
- 5” x 2”
- 5” x 1”
Â
On the solid yellow cardstock, I used a decorative punch along one edge. The punch I used looks like scales and I thought it went well with the collection. You could also use decorative scissors or an electronic cutting machine to cut decorative edges onto the piece, if preferred.

I hope you have found this tutorial helpful for using those patterned papers in your layouts. This technique can be used with any of the Grapchi 45 paper collections. Simply choose two of the patterned papers from your favorite collection to start. Then, select a third, less busy or smaller patterned paper for the third sheet. Add in one or two solid colors for balance, and add embellishments! Check out the tutorial for a sneak peek at this same layout I made with another newer Graphic 45 collection!Â

We would love to see your layouts if you try out this style with another collection so don’t forget to tag Graphic 45 in your social media posts. As always, happy crafting! ~Kristine

G45 Tip: Balance is Key When Mixing Patterns
When working with heavily patterned papers, choose one or two bold designs as your foundation, then soften the look with a smaller-scale print and solid colors. This creates visual balance while still letting the beautiful patterns shine. Don’t be afraid to experiment—this simple formula works with any Graphic 45 collection!
