Little Women Tri-fold Folio

By Kathy Clement

“Designing and creating new folios has become one of my favorite crafting activities.  Folios are quick to make, easy to store and fun to give.  Creating a folio provides splendid opportunities to add fun folds, flaps, flips, pockets and tags to a basic card shape.

The base of this Something Splendid Tri-Fold Folio is quite simple.  I’ve overlapped two 7” x 5” side fold card bases to create a large pocket in the center.  There’s no fussy binding mechanism to build, which really simplifies the design.

I love this image of Jo and her Professor sharing an umbrella. I framed it with black satin ribbon and some pale yellow flowers to pick up on the gold tones in the papers.

This lovely image is matted onto a pocket. This allowed me to add an unexpected interactive element to the front cover.

I’ve dressed up a Staples ATC Black Policy Envelope, an ephemera card, and a 4” x 6” image from the paper collection.

Tip:  Crop the corners of an ephemera card and mat on black cardstock to create a custom photo mat.  Journaling can go on one side of the card, while a small photo can be mounted on the back.

Tip:  Decorate an ATC Policy Envelope quickly by cutting around a small ephemera card.  Trim around the edges of floral designs to create a more organic feel.  Then use a small hole punch and add a Staples Ornate Key as a finishing touch.

Tip: Trim around a book page image, then crop the corners.  Mat on black cardstock so that a photo can be added to the reverse side.  I’ve clipped these 3 items together with a little binder clip tied with black satin ribbon.

I’ve kept the inside elements flat to ensure that the folio will close properly.  But that doesn’t mean the album is boring!

Here, I’ve folded back a page to form a quick pocket for 2 Staples Black ATC tags.  The pocket is also deep enough to hold photos.

Tip: Create a hinge to transform a regular Black Policy Envelope into a flap page. To to this, cut a 1” strip of paper that is the same width as the envelope base. Score the strip in half at ½ inch.  Glue one half of the strip to the base of the envelope, and the other half under the designer paper.  Then you can decorate the front of the envelope with an ephemera card, or a die cut image as I have done here.

The center panel has a large inner pocket that is large enough to hold 2 Staples Black Alpha Tags.  I’ve also turned an ephemera card into a fun flip up page.

You can mount photos on the backs of the tags, too!

Here’s a look at the back side of that Policy Envelope flap page.  I’ve added a little photo mount to the base of the envelope.

Tip: Create custom buttons on a Policy Envelope string mechanism by punching ½” circles with a punch.

The waterfall feature inside the front cover provides even more room for photo.

I’ve created a short YouTube video walk through of this Something Splendid Folio so that you can see how the pages flow and the mechanisms work.  I hope you enjoy!” ~Kathy
