Dream Album in a Box

By Sandy Trefger

“When I saw the new Imagine paper collection by Graphic 45, I knew that I wanted to create something that would hold notes or photos of special moments such as dreams fulfilled or dreams to come.  I had looked at different versions of an album in a box on YouTube and decided that style would be perfect for what I had in mind. I used a tutorial (with permission) that is on YouTube and I will share the link in the supply list so that you can also make this album if you wish. I followed the tutorial for the basic construction of the box album base and then did the pages more freestyle by cutting the pages to the sizes I needed and changing up the flaps. You are going to love this collection especially if you do projects with fussy cutting!

I used the new Graphic 45 metal die sets for this album to create the “metal” gears and the frame that is underneath the flowers.  I cut the pieces out of dark brown cardstock and then added two different shades of gold embossing powders for the look I wanted to achieve.  When you compare the gears to the actual metal key below, it’s hard to tell that they are really just cardstock.

There are so many wonderful elements to fussy cut from this collection.   In the photo below you’ll see that I added a hot air balloon along with the man flying with wings and the tiny butterfly with a clock.

Tip:  To give your fussy cut elements some lift and to create a dimensional scene on your project, cut small pieces of black chipboard.  Stack as many pieces as you need with glue to get the height you need. Make sure the chipboard is cut so that it does not show on the edges of your fussy cut piece such as the man flying with wings.  I used about 4 or 5 layers of chipboard to lift him up so his wing could be glued flat onto the “Dream” piece. I also added tiny bits of chipboard layering underneath his leg and wing extension. You could use foam dots for layering but chipboard is so much sturdier.

 Dream Album in a Box

Three of the flaps on this box are held in place with large magnetic snaps.  To open you lift the front flap and two side flaps and let them fall to the side.  In the photo below, I show how it looks with the inner bottom flaps dropped down and the outer lid flaps still in place.

Once you open up the flaps all the way, you’ll see an accordion pocket with the flap in the lid and the album pages in the base of the box.

Next, are the different pages with pockets.  I’ve added tags from the cut-a-part paper in the collection and created photo mats with solid cardstock.

When you lift the flap inside the lid, you’ll find the accordion pocket that will hold lots of notes, letters, extra photos, postcards, and tags.

Tip:  You can add embossing powder directly onto areas of the patterned paper to give it a metal look such as what I did on the teapot. You can see it better in the close up photo below.  Just add your embossing powder sparingly so that it does not cover the entire piece. Use an embossing ink dabber to make it easier to apply and emboss your powder where you want it.  Be careful to not overheat and burn your paper. Gradually heat and allow the paper to cool between heat times.
