Hello G45ers!
Interactive cards have a special kind of magic, and this Open Window Pop-Up Card is one of those projects that instantly surprises and delights. Using the beautiful Graphic 45 Scenic Route collection, kraft cardstock, and a clever interactive card mechanism, this handmade card opens like a pair of windows, letting light into a room. The pop-up panels move outward automatically as the card opens, creating a stunning dimensional effect that looks complicated but is surprisingly fun to make. If you love interactive card making, pop-up card tutorials, Graphic 45 paper crafting projects, and unique handmade card ideas, this easy step-by-step project is perfect for adding movement and storytelling to your next creation.

Open Window Pop Up Card
Tutorial by Evanjelene
“I’ve always loved windows especially the ones you open in the morning when fresh air comes in, curtains move softly and suddenly the whole room feels different.
A closed space becomes alive the moment a window opens.
That feeling is exactly what reminded me of this interactive card technique.
I love trying new interactive card ideas and this particular mechanism immediately caught my attention because it opens like a pair of windows. As soon as the card is opened, the panels move outward on their own, almost like letting light into a room.
So I decided to recreate the structure and style it in my own way using the Scenic Route collection and my favourite layered details.
Here’s how I made this window opening interactive card.

Materials Used
- Kraft cardstock
- Scenic Route collection
- Ornate Pocket Envelope
- Paper trimmer
- Scoring board
- Bone folder
- Strong adhesive

Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1 — Creating the Card Base
- Cut kraft cardstock to 9.5” x 6.25”
- Score at 4.75” along the longer side
- Fold and burnish well
Think of this as building the walls of the house before adding the windows.
Step 2 — Preparing the Background
- Cut patterned papers from Graphic45 Scenic Route slightly smaller than the panels
- Adhere them to the front and inside of the card
- For extra room I used the Graphic45 Ornate Pocket Envelope metal die.
- Keep the centre fold free from glue
I like finishing the background first so the mechanism sits neatly on top.
Step 3 — Pop-Up Element 1 (Window Mechanism)
You will need 2 pieces.
- Cut kraft cardstock to 4.75” x 1.5”
- Mark the centre at 0.75”
- Draw a guideline parallel to the longer edge
- From one end, mark 1.5” along both long edges
- Join opposite corners to form an X
- Cut away the shaded triangular portion
- Fold along all drawn lines carefully
This element works like hidden hinges. When the card opens, these folds gently push the panels outward just like windows opening automatically.
Step 4 — Pop-Up Element 2 (Support Pieces)
You will need 2 pieces.
- Cut cardstock to 4.75” x 0.75”
- Score at 0.75”
- Score again at 4”
- Fold along both lines
These supports help lift the window panels and keep the movement smooth.
Step 5 — Pop-Up Element 3 (Window Panels)
You will need 2 pieces.
- Cut cardstock to 7” x 3.25” from your favorite pattern from the Graphic45 Scenic Route collection.
- Score at 3.75”
- Fold neatly
Decorate these panels before attaching them. I used patterned papers and simple layering so the mechanism remains the star of the design.
Step 6 — Assembling the Card
Now the magic happens.
- Open the card base flat
- Attach Element 1 pieces symmetrically inside the card
- Adhere Element 2 underneath Element 1 in the centre
- Attach Element 3 panels onto Elements 1 and 2
- Slowly close and reopen the card to test the movement
When everything is aligned properly, the panels open outward the moment the card opens just like a window welcoming light inside.
Step 7 — Decorating the Front
- Add layered paper elements using Ephemera & Chipboard elements from the same collection.
- Build dimension using foam tape
- Keep embellishments balanced so movement isn’t restricted
- Finish with a sentiment of your choice
I wanted the outside to feel calm and inviting like standing outside a house before opening its windows.
What I love most about interactive cards is the experience they create.
A regular card is read. An interactive card is discovered.
Just like opening a window changes the feeling of a room, opening this card changes the moment for the person receiving it. There’s a tiny pause of surprise and for me, that’s what handmade crafting is all about.
So the next time you see an interesting fold online, try it. You never know which window it might open in your creativity.
Happy crafting,
Eva

Tips for Creating Smooth Interactive Movement
- Use a strong adhesive so the mechanism stays secure after repeated opening and closing.
- Burnish every fold carefully with a bone folder for crisp movement and cleaner alignment.
- Test the mechanism before decorating heavily to make sure the panels open smoothly.
- Keep bulky embellishments away from the folds so the interactive elements can move freely.
- Lightweight layering works best when creating dimensional interactive cards.
One of the things we love most about interactive cards is the experience they create. The moment those window panels open feels like a tiny surprise filled with creativity and charm. It transforms a simple handmade card into something memorable and interactive for the recipient.
We hope this project inspires you to experiment with new folds and mechanisms in your own paper crafting. If you create your own version of this Open Window Pop-Up Card, we’d love to see it! Be sure to share your projects and tag @Graphic45 so we can celebrate your creativity together.
