Double Pop-Up Step Card
Tutorial by Evanjelene
“Some cards politely open and then there are cards like this Double Pop-Up Step Card that practically burst out singing “It’s the most wonderful time of the year!” If you love dimensional cards that stand tall, show off layers of beautiful papers and make people ask, “How on earth did you build this?” , then this little creation is for you.
The best part? It looks complicated but it’s honestly just a few folds, a few steps (literally) and a whole lot of pretty paper from the Deck the Halls collection by Graphic45.
And because I know folding instructions can sometimes feel like decoding ancient scrolls, I’ve added a video tutorial for complete clarity. Now let’s build this merry little architectural masterpiece!

Step-by-Step Instructions
- Making the First Set of Steps
Material: Kraft 13.5 × 9 cm (Make 2 pieces)
- Take a 13.5 × 9 cm kraft piece.
- Score along the length at 5 cm and 10 cm.
- Fold to form a step — it should look like a tiny cardboard staircase.
- Decorate it with your favourite papers from the Deck the Halls collection.
- Repeat the whole thing to make two of these.
- Making the Second Set of Steps
Material: Kraft 6 × 15 cm (Make 2 pieces)
- Take a 6 × 15 cm kraft strip.
- Score at 5 cm and 10 cm — same fold pattern as the big steps.
- Fold to form a smaller step.
- Decorate with matching or contrasting patterns from the collection.
- Make two of these as well.
- Creating the Card Base
Material: Kraft 20.5 × 10 cm
- Take the 20.5 × 10 cm kraft sheet.
- Score at 10 cm and 10.5 cm — this creates a thin spine.
- Fold along the lines to form the base.
- Decorate the front and inside with any coordinating paper you love.
- Assembly Time
- Take your first big step and paste it onto the card base, right on the inside fold.
- Now grab your small step and attach it in front of the bigger one so that it rests nicely on it.
- Repeat this entire process on the other side if you’re going for a double step card.
- I added a tiny flap using the Graphic45 Tag Metal Die so you can easily lift the steps. Totally optional but very cute.
- Decorate the card cover using chipboard, ephemera, candy canes, stockings, wreaths, nutcrackers — basically anything festive that makes you smile.
And You’re Done!
Your Double Pop-Up Step Card is now complete. It’s one of those designs that looks like it took ages, but you and I both know it’s really just score–fold–decorate–done.
If any step confused you even a tiny bit, the video tutorial will make everything crystal clear.
Happy crafting — and may every step you fold stay crisp and cooperative!” ~Evanjelene

Crafting Tips for Best Results
1. Score Twice, Fold Once
Crisp folds make dimensional cards look polished. Use a bone folder to create sharp creases that help the steps stand tall.
2. Mix & Match Patterns
Deck the Halls offers contrast-friendly designs — combine stripes, florals, and classic holiday motifs to make each step pop.
3. Use Strong Adhesive for Pop-Up Elements
Double-sided tape or tacky tape is your best friend here. Liquid glue can warp paper on pop-up mechanisms, so use sparingly.
4. Add Lightweight Dimension
Chipboard, sequins, and small die-cuts add interest without weighing down your pop-ups.
5. Test the Mechanism Before Committing
Give the card a gentle open-and-close test before final gluing to ensure everything tucks, lifts, and pops just right.
