Brand Ambassador 2018-2019
Katie Z. – Singapore
“I’m Katie Z., currently resides in Singapore, a tiny little red dot along the equator on the map; also known as the Green City where you will be surrounded with loads of greeneries and get to enjoy summer all year round. It has been a while and I’m so glad and honoured to be back with Graphic 45 again, bringing more refreshing inspiration.
For those who know me for the very first time, I’m one such curio, whimsy imaginative lady who loves immersing myself in the land of Creation, boggling through my creative brain cells to make beautiful things out from the norm and create from the unusual. Previously trained and had worked for Science and Medicine for more than a decade, my passion towards designing, innovating and creating led me to move into creating. Thanks to decades’ worth of scientific & medical research training, the innovation process in experimental design had made the transition possible and not a scary one, although I'm still at my infancy stage. The combination of Science & Art tend to excite me to a great extent and I do enjoy the mind-boggling yet fulfilling creative process.
Most of my works are heavily influenced by various old art forms, history, science & medicines, fables & tales and make-believe. Creating highly original works often with a story behind is another artistic aspect I love to bring into my project(s). A true believer in “Art do speak” and aspire to be one such real Artist who is able to create Art that will inspire, encourage and influence people in every means.
Fun Facts:
-
An avid coffee drinker who knows the science behind in how to make a good cup of coffee, and was trained in coffee making!
-
A single project of mine can take up to months to conceptualize and create, especially so when comes to highly original works where I revolve my project with a story.
-
Loves trench and coats of almost every kind despite staying in a tropical country. I’ve about 20 of them in my closet.

Magical Door Tag – Fairie Dust
For my very first self-portrait project as Graphic 45 Ambassador, I’m re-creating this Fairie Dust Magical Door using my very own video tutorial which I’ve shared previously as part of my DT assignment with Graphic 45. This is one project that reflects my unique style in creating; how I create a project out by using various Graphic 45 staples. I went beyond using what tags and other staples are intended to be used by widening their function and usage. The end result is often very satisfying and I can’t wait to share this tutorial with you again.
Tooth Fairy Magical Door Tag By Katie Z
Though purple is not one of my most favourite colours, I used gold (with a little touch of white gold) as a complementary colour which gives the fairy door a magical feel.
Tip: Try to work around your project with a scheme of colours and try to stick within a range of colours. This will make your project look more synchronized and eye pleasing. Having a colour wheel on hand will help in finding the right matching colours.
The tags dies (large, regular and ATC) are exceptionally useful for this project and saves me a substantial amount of time in lining the tags with my favourite pattern papers.
Tip: The tags dies are designed to cut slightly smaller than the tags, leaving a tiny border around the tags when glued down. Cover them with some dresden (or ribbons) around the borders for a more defined look.
Tip: A mix of some paper and synthetic flowers will give your project more dimensions and depth, and perhaps a little less boring.
The flower dies for this instance is very useful in creating matching paper flowers, which I don’t have to deliberately find (or buy) matching pre-made flowers to go with my project.
I used the shabby chic drawer pull as a tiny porch roof above the door. Wings are optional, however, I just love wings when comes to fairy based projects.
Tip: Add the wings only at the very last step so that they won’t serve as a form of an obstacle when you are trying to embellish your project.
It’s always very interesting and intriguing to find things to fussy cut, especially so when you are an avid fussy cutter like me. Despite Graphic 45 designs are always filled abundantly with images to cut, sometimes you just want even more. Notice how I fussy cut some elements out from the pattern paper to embellish the porch roof and the flower on the door.
For the little window inside is just a little layout within showing some fairy creatures. While I’d want to add more things inside, at the end I chose not to keep it simple. Behind every fairy door is magical, with no limit and it’s boundless. Besides making this as a fairy tooth door (which is what my tutorial is intended for), you can add some magical fairy dust bottles or even use it to store all your little trinkets or jewelries. As the box behind the door is of a good small size, this can be used as a form of special gift.
Well, I hope such a “revival” project will provide you with more extensive ideas in how to create a project out from a box.” ~Katie Z.
