Hello, G45ers!
Let's kick off this weekend with a fun and fabulous step by step tutorial on how to create your own shabby chic pocket watch by Joanne Bain. Joanne recently shared a Hallowe'en in Wonderland FOB Watch with us on our blog. This project was such a hit that we received many requests asking for a tutorial, and Joanne has been so kind as to deliver and give the G45ers what they want. This pocket watch and mini album have been created with our Bloom paper collection and a small household metal tin. So round up a circular tin and let's create some magic. But first, we are pleased to announce that our 2019 Christmas collection, Joy to the World is now available.

FOB Watch Tutorial
By Joanne Bain
“Hi G45ers
Joanne here with you today to share a Fobwatch I created using the absolutely gorgeous Bloom Collection, G45 metal staples and a 3 inch round tin purchased from a cheapy shop. Because I received many requests about how to make the Fobwatch after creating my other one for my introduction post so I thought I would share the technique for this months blog post.
The Fobwatch front features lots of fussy cut details and dimension cut from the gorgeous Bloom collection.
‘Everything Grows With Love’
To add a little extra detail to the front of the Fobwatch I added a few pieces of chipboard which were all painted white to keep the overall look a shabby type of feel.
The chain was also painted white and I added some G45 Bloom chipboard pieces to the end.
Once opened there is a pull out round mini album, which when fully puked out has space for 7 photos and on the back of each is a place for journaling.
To create the top buckle I have used two G45 Metal Door Pulls, a small binder ring from one of the Graphic 45 ATC tag sets and a knob from the metal door plates and knobs set.
Step by Step Tutorial:
How to create a Fobwatch Base by Joanne Bain
This tutorial will show you how to create the base only of the Fobwatch using Graphic 45 Metal Staples.
Supply List:
- 4500588 Antique Metal Doors Pulls
- 4501296 Shabby Chic Metal Door Plates & Knobs
- Small Binder Ring
- 3 inch Round Tin
- Hot Glue Gun
Please Note –
Details for colouring shown a little further down the tutorial.
The round tin that was used for this is about 3 inches across and about 1 inch deep. A large brad of about 1cm wide would suit if you don’t have access to the metal door plates and knobs.
Step 1. You will need two metal door pulls.
Step 2. Glue together back to back as shown below.
Step 3. Now you will need one of the large brads from the Metal Door Plates & Knobs Set. If you don’t have one of these just a large brad. These brads are about 1cm wide.
Step 4. Remove the pin from the back of the brad as shown below.
Step 5. Next, you will need a small binder ring. This one is from the G45 Ivory ATC Tag set, but any small binder ring will do.
Step 6. Using a hot glue gun, apply glue to the top of the door pulls and attach the binder ring as shown below.
Step 7. Now you will need the large brad. Using hot glue attach the large brad top as shown below.
Step 8. Now you will need your round tin.
Step 9. Using sandpaper rough up where the Fobwatch top is to be glued down. This helps to get a stronger bond.
Step 10. Attach the Fobwatch top as shown below.
Step 11. Now to colour. I painted the entire thing with a few good thick coats of white Gesso. Once dried I coloured using mica powders and waxes, but a similar effect could be created using watercolours.
Note – If you wish to create a darker version of the Fobwatch that will match the colour of the G45 metal staples, simply paint the tin with black Gesso and then use Finnabair Vintage Gold wax to colour.
Step 12. This is how mine finished up after colouring. Because I was creating with the G45 Bloom collection I wanted the backing to be a little shabby.
Now that the entire backing is painted and coloured the hot glue blobs are hidden nicely.
Once the top of the Fobwatch was assembled it was attached to the top of the round tin and the entire thing was then given a few coats of white Gesso and then coloured using coordinating mica powders and waxes.
Well, I hope I have inspired you to have a go at creating your own Fobwatch, I think it would make the perfect gift for a grandparent if you could bear to part with it once it’s finished.
