Steampunk Flip Folio: Introducing Folio Champion, Kathy Clement

Hello, G45ers!

Welcome to the Graphic 45 blog our Creative Wonderland.  Today, we are featuring one of our incredible Special Project Designers over our Club G45 program, Kathy Clement.  For Kathy's #G45Selfie project she has created one of her signature folio albums starring our newest collection, Imagine and our Tag Staples.  So let's cut to the chase and jump into the fun!

Special Projects Designer 2018-2019

Kathy Clement – USA

“My name is Kathy and I am addicted to paper.  I have loved color and design ever since I can remember.  My mother taught me to make handmade cards when I was a little girl, using my crayons and Doodle Pad.  For years I was a busy mom with no time for serious crafting. Once our 5 beautiful children grew up and moved into their adult lives, I had time to pursue my passion for paper.

While I am primarily a card maker, I also love to create mini albums, canvases, altered art and even scrapbook layouts.  My most recent crafting obsession is designing interactive card folios. My style is decidedly vintage/shabby chic with lots of layers, embellishments and ribbons to add loads of texture and dimension.  Graphic 45 speaks my creative language, and I’m a G45’er for life!

I live in beautiful North Carolina with my darling husband of 42 years. If I’m not in my sunny studio creating, I’m probably in the kitchen whipping up something tasty to eat, or playing with our 3 delightful granddaughters. Being part of the G45 Special Projects Design Team with Annette Green and Maria Cole is the thrill of a lifetime!  I’m having more fun than a person should be allowed to have designed and creating projects for the new #ClubG45 monthly kits!

Steampunk Flip Folio

You may not know this, but when I started my Kathy by Design blog in 2013, I chose 3 words to define and guide me: Imagination, Creativity, and Whimsy.  So when G45 released their soft and feminine Imagine Steampunk Collection, my heart rejoiced.  This collection reflects everything I love about papercrafting. It was an easy decision to use this collection for my #G45Selfie Project!

I discovered the joy of creating interactive folios while serving my term as a G45 Brand Ambassador.  I just love figuring out ways to add flips, flaps, pockets, tags and waterfalls to a card sized project like this 5” x 7” folio.  For me, it’s like solving a puzzle, which is something I also love to do.

Tip: Alter G45 Metal Staples with Distress Paint.  I tap the paint on with my fingertip, letting each color dry between layers.  I’ve used Peacock Feathers and Fossilized Amber on my Staples Door Plate and Knob, Clock Key and Steampunk Gears.

Tip: Create your own custom ribbon colors with white seam binding and G45 Decades Ink Pads.  Spread the ink directly onto a non-porous surface like a craft mat, or glass mat…or even acetate packaging.  Spritz lightly with water then dip the ribbon into the inky puddle. Scrunch the ink through the ribbon and gently heat dry.  Now your ribbon is color matched to your favorite G45 Paper collection.

Tip: Use the scraps on your work table to create fun mini folios to tuck into shallow pockets.

This mini folio is just 3” wide.  It’s the perfect size to hold a little decorated Staples Laser Cut To From ATC Tag.  Use the G45 Large Tag, ATC Tag and Flowers die to cut a cover for the back of the tag and ink around the letters to make them pop.

This waterfall feature in the center of the folio will hold 4” x 6” photos.  The pocket on the right holds two decorate mini photo albums made from table scraps.

I used a border strip to create the belly band feature on this waterfall element.  Small magnets keep it closed up neat and tidy!

I’ve added ephemera cards for journaling or small photos.

To help you get a feel for the flow of this folio, I’ve prepared a little video tour.  I hope you enjoy!
